192. Blow Out Your Birthday Candles - If You Can

Do you have trouble blowing out the candles on your birthday cake? Do you get winded dashing up a short flight of stairs? If you’re a smoker, diminished lung power may be to blame for these failed feats.

Take this simple test to determine your lung capacity (that is, the amount of air your lungs hold in reserve).

  1. 1.Strike a match. When the flame is burning steadily, hold it about 6 inches from your mouth.

  2. 2.Inhale deeply, then try to blow out the match by exhaling quickly through your mouth, without pursing your lips. Try more than once, if you must.

  3. 3.If you can’t blow out the match, your lung capacity may be impaired.  See your doctor.
