234. Simple Solutions for Vaginal Dryness
At menopause, estrogen levels drop. The decline in estrogen production is responsible for atrophic vaginitis, or vaginal dryness. Intercourse may be painful or difficult.
Here are some ways to deal with this problem.
-
•Don’t use deodorant soaps or scented products in the vaginal area.
-
•Use a water-soluble lubricant, such as K-Y brand jelly, to facilitate penetration during intercourse. Avoid oils or petroleum-based products—they encourage infection.
-
•Ask your physician about an estrogen cream, tablets, or estrogen ring that can be inserted into the vagina.
-
•If you still have pain during intercourse, burning when you urinate, or if you notice a pink-tinged vaginal discharge, contact your doctor.
