72. Pneumonia: Tips for a Full Recovery

Pneumonia can develop when the lungs are infected by either bacteria, viruses, fungi, or toxins, causing inflammation. Certain people are at a greater risk for pneumonia than others. They include:

  1. Elderly people, because the body’s ability to fight off disease diminishes with age.

  2. People who are hospitalized for other conditions.

  3. Individuals with suppressed cough reflex following a stroke.

  4. Smokers, because tobacco smoke paralyzes the tiny hairs that otherwise help to expel germ-ridden mucus from the lungs.

  5. People who suffer from malnutrition, alcoholism, or viral infections.

  6. People with emphysema or chronic bronchitis.

  7. People with sickle cell anemia.

  8. Cancer patients undergoing radiation treatments or chemotherapy, both of which wear down the immune system.

Note: These persons should consult their doctor about a vaccine for pneumonia. It is usually given once at age 65. The vaccine may be needed more than once for persons with the above conditions who are under age 65.

To speed recovery from pneumonia:

  1. Get plenty of bed rest.

  2. Use a cool mist humidifier in the room or rooms in which you spend the bulk of your time.

  3. Drink plenty of fluids.

  4. Take any medications your doctor prescribes. Don’t suppress coughing, especially if it brings up sputum.
