DIY Masks Work for Added Protection

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) now recommends that people wear a cloth face covering in public settings. This includes places like grocery stores and pharmacies where other social distancing measures may be difficult to maintain.

This is a new CDC recommendation based on the most recent scientific evidence.

For all you ‘do-it-yourselfers,’ this is your opportunity to shine!

Simple, homemade cloth face coverings can effectively slow the spread of coronavirus, especially for people who may have the virus and do not know it. The good news is that you can make these cloth face coverings from household items or from common materials at low cost.

Any cotton fabric will do. Maybe now is the time to do something useful with those many cotton t-shirts buried deep in your clothing drawers!

Once made, these masks can be routinely washed in a washing machine to properly clean them.

Who should NOT wear these cloth face coverings?

Cloth face coverings should not be placed on young children under age 2, anyone who has trouble breathing, or is unconscious, incapacitated or otherwise unable to remove the mask without assistance.

Don’t own a sewing machine? No problem! For simple instructions from the CDC on how to make your own, either by no sewing or using a sewing machine, click here.
